About The Project

This project involved a comprehensive restoration of an International fire truck, focusing on addressing significant rust, straightening dents, and a full cab repaint, ensuring its longevity for years to come.

Key aspects included:

  • Disassembly of the truck to expose all problem areas.
  • Removal of rust from the cab and doors.
  • Straightening out dents.
  • Cab repaint.
  • Future-proofing the cab with rust inhibitor in problem areas.
  • Reassembly of the cab and refitting of necessary glass.

The Process

Reviving a classic like this International fire truck required a systematic approach to ensure every detail was addressed. Here's how we brought it back to life:

Initial Assessment & Disassembly

1

Our first step was a thorough assessment of the fire truck to identify all areas affected by rust and damage, followed by carefully disassembling the cab to fully expose these problem spots. This disassembly allowed us to gain full access to hidden rust and structural issues that wouldn't be visible otherwise. It's vital for ensuring no problem areas are missed, setting the foundation for a truly comprehensive and lasting repair.

Rust Repair & Panel Straightening

2

With the cab disassembled, our team focused on the critical task of removing all traces of rust from the cab and doors, alongside straightening any dents to restore the panels' original form.Rust is a vehicle's enemy, and its complete removal is crucial for longevity. Combining this with dent straightening ensures a smooth, even surface, essential for the subsequent painting process and the structural integrity of the cab.

Future-Proofing & Paint Preparation

3

To prevent future rust issues, we applied a rust inhibitor to all vulnerable areas, followed by the preparation of the cab surfaces for painting. This preventative measure is key to the ‘lasting solution’ philosophy at BF Motorbody Repairs. Applying a rust inhibitor significantly extends the life of the cab, protecting the investment, while thorough preparation ensures the paint adheres perfectly for a flawless, durable finish.

Painting & Finishing

The cab was then ready for painting, and it received a complete repaint, restoring its vibrant colour and protective coating.A good paint job isn't just about looks; it also provides a layer of vehicle protection against the elements. Our painter ensured an even, durable finish that not only makes the fire truck look fantastic but also adds to its overall lifespan.
